BP Geopark Chairman’s Visit to ULM In Order to Socialize Meratus Geopark
Banjarmasin – Rector of Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) Prof. Dr. Ahmad Alim Bachri, S.E., M.Si received a visit from the General Chair and Daily Chair of the Geopark Management Agency and his team as well as the Head of the South Kalimantan Provincial Environmental Service Hanifah Dwi Nirwana, S.T, MT on Tuesday (12/09/2023) at the Chancellor’s Room.
In his speech, the Rector really appreciated the planned activities of the Meratus Geopark Management Agency (BP) to carry out outreach activities related to the Meratus Geopark within the ULM campus. According to the Rector, outreach must be carried out so that students, the academic community and the wider community can know how the Meratus Geopark is bringing the world to South Kalimantan. The Rector of ULM hopes that a lot of information will be provided and disseminated in each faculty regarding the events and activities carried out by the Meratus Geopark. Apart from that, it is important to include ULM’s role in supporting the more advanced Meratus Geopark.
Located in South Kalimantan Province, the Meratus Mountains Geopark is one of the tourism icons and the pride of the people of South Kalimantan. Geoparks (Earth Parks) are a single unified geographical area, where geological sites and landscapes are managed holistically. Where the components of Geopark Area development include Community Development, Economic Development and Conservation.
Meratus Geopark is currently being proposed as a UNESCO Global Geopark (UGG), collaborating with parties including academics, business circles, media and communities to develop the earth park area. Therefore, this meeting was held in order to carry out outreach regarding the Meratus Geopark so that it becomes better known to the general public. This is not without reason. Meratus Geopark is an extraordinary natural gift that was recognized nationally in 2018 and is currently being proposed to become one of the UNESCO Global Geoparks which will be assessed in 2024.
