Gastin Selected as Head of the Indonesian Delegation for the 2025 JENESYS Program in Japan

Banjarmasin — Gastin Gabriel Jangkang, a student in the Medical Profession program at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK) at Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM), was selected as one of seven Indonesian delegates for the JENESYS 2025 ASEAN–Japan Students Conference program, and was also entrusted with the role of head of the Indonesian delegation.

The delegates’ departure began with a Pre-Departure Training (PDT) activity, officially opened by the Deputy for Youth Services at the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora), Dr. Drs. Yohan, M.Si., in Jakarta on Sunday (January 10, 2026). The PDT aims to equip participants with the knowledge, ethics, and mental readiness before participating in the international program in Japan.

Gastin was selected through a rigorous national selection process in late 2025, based on criteria established by the Japanese government. In addition to academic achievement, the selection process also considered international communication skills, leadership, and the delegates’ capacity to articulate ideas in the global public sphere. The trust placed in him as delegation leader reflects the leadership capacity and global potential of ULM students.

“This is both a mandate and an opportunity to hone my leadership spirit. While in Japan, I want to explore issues of climate change, information technology, artificial intelligence, and medicine,” said Gastin.

The JENESYS 2025 program will be held offline in Tokyo from January 13–20, 2026, involving delegates from ASEAN countries and Japan. During the program, participants will participate in thematic discussions and exchange ideas on education and digital technology, climate change and disaster management, startups, and international collaboration, all aligned with global issues and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The series of activities also includes courtesy visits, field studies, and a homestay program to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture and social systems.

In his remarks, Dr. Yohan emphasized the importance of the delegates’ role as ambassadors of the nation. He encouraged participants to perform at their best, build international networks, and maintain Indonesia’s reputation through soft diplomacy. Delegates are also required to produce a Post Program Innovation (PPI) as a tangible contribution upon returning home.

The participation of ULM students in this international forum demonstrates that their interests, talents, and expertise are capable of competing on a global level. The trust earned by Gastin Gabriel Jangkang also reinforces Lambung Mangkurat University’s commitment to supporting leadership development, international insight, and student contributions to strategic global issues.
