Banjarbaru – The Minister of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, Ph.D., emphasized that Indonesia must accelerate climate action across various sectors to ensure that its post-COP30 commitments in Belem, Brazil, can be effectively realized. This message was delivered at the Forestry Update Course (FUCO) 2025 Public Lecture held by Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) on November 29, 2025, at the ULM Banjarbaru Auditorium.

In his lecture, the Minister stated that climate change is no longer just an international agenda but has become a pressing domestic challenge. He outlined several key points:

  1. Waste and solid waste management must be strengthened through technology, education, and regulations that reduce waste production at the source.
  2. Air and water pollution control must be a priority at the regional and national levels because they are directly related to public health.
  3. Biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and forest protection must be accelerated to reduce carbon loss.
  4. More aggressive mitigation and adaptation efforts are needed, including the use of clean energy, green economy incentives, and environmental permit oversight.
  5. Universities like ULM play a crucial role in generating knowledge, innovation, and human resources capable of strengthening environmental policies.

Minister Hanif emphasized that climate solutions will not succeed without collaboration.

“This is not just a government matter. The academic world, including ULM, has a strategic contribution in paving the way for science-based climate action,” he said.

As the organizer of FUCO 2025, ULM demonstrated its commitment as a center for the development of forestry and environmental science in Kalimantan. The event attracted hundreds of participants from academics, researchers, students, practitioners, and relevant stakeholders.

ULM Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmad, S.E., M.Si., in his remarks emphasized that FUCO has become a strategic space for ULM to bridge the research-policy-practice dialogue, particularly on tropical forestry and climate change issues.

The event was interactive with a question-and-answer session. Participants raised questions about current issues such as deforestation, urban air quality, hazardous waste management, and opportunities for implementing green technology. The Minister provided detailed responses, including bureaucratic challenges, the importance of scientific data, and steps for regional-central collaboration.
