ULM Students Achieve Excellence in the 2025 ASA Data Quest Competition and Advance to the International Level

Banjarmasin — Students from Lambung Mangkurat University have once again achieved impressive results on the international stage. Four teams from the Statistics Study Program won awards at the national level of the 2025 ASA International Data Quest Competition, a global data analysis competition organized by the American Statistical Association (ASA).

This prestigious competition brings together undergraduate and graduate students from various countries to analyze big datasets, develop statistical insights, and present their analysis results in videos and slides, which are judged by a national and international jury. This year, ULM teams were not only nominated but also achieved top national positions in several categories.

Four ULM Teams Notch Achievements

The following ULM teams won national awards at the 2025 ASA International Data Quest Competition:

Tritics Team (Best 1 – Data Visualization)

Members: Muhammad Azkaa Al Atqiaa, Erpan Maulana, Muhammad Fauzan Adzim, Supervising Lecturer: Ardiansyah Abubakar, S.Pd., M.Si.

Glorystician Team (Best 1 – Consideration of Ethics)

Members: Muhammad Radityo Denishworo Marsudi, Dwi Annisa Febriyanti, Supervising Lecturer: Samsul Arifin, S.Si., M.Si.

Vizchiefs Team (Best 2 – Consideration of Ethics)

Members: Dwi Cahyaning Putri, M. Agha Putra Al Fajrin, Yahya Kamil Fitaroq, Supervising Lecturer: Samsul Arifin, S.Si., M.Si.

Chartosaur Inferna Team (Best 3 – Consideration of Ethics)

Members: Nabila Soleha Friliyati, Najla Khalisha, Aulia Naylan Muna, Fatma Rohilda. Supervising Lecturer: Samsul Arifin, S.Si., M.Si.

Based on this achievement, the Tritics Team and Glorystician Team, as Best 1, will represent Indonesia in the international competition alongside delegations from other countries such as Brazil and Turkey.

One of the supervising lecturers, Ardiansyah Abubakar, S.Pd., M.Si., ASA Data Quest is a two-level competition—national and international—that assesses skills in statistical analysis, data visualization, scientific communication, and ethical considerations.

“Students are asked to prepare a video presentation of a maximum of five minutes and four content slides that cover the analysis process, core visualizations, statistical insights, and ethical aspects according to ASA standards. This work is then evaluated by the national jury and then advanced to the international level without changes,” he said.

He added that the entire competition process was conducted online, so the team is now awaiting the announcement of the results from the international jury.

The students’ success is inseparable from the intensive mentoring of their lecturers. The mentors not only provided guidance on selecting statistical methods but also ensured that students understood the ethics of analysis, the visualization process, and the technical requirements for compiling their work.

“We want students to perform optimally and be able to compete globally. The mentoring includes analysis reviews, input on video content, and an emphasis on accuracy and transparency,” explained Ardiansyah.

This achievement once again demonstrates the ability of ULM students to compete in international competitions based on data science and technology. ULM is committed to continuously strengthening an academic ecosystem that supports students’ interests, talents, and potential in all fields—including data analysis, research, innovation, and international competitions.

Through the support of lecturers, learning facilities, and increasingly developed collaboration spaces, ULM hopes that more students can follow in similar footsteps.

“This achievement demonstrates the quality of ULM’s young generation in statistics and data analysis. Hopefully, next year, more students will participate and bring home even greater achievements,” concluded Ardiansyah.
