Banjarmasin – Another proud achievement has been achieved by a student from Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM). Gastin Gabriel Jangkang, a student in the Medical Profession Program at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK) at ULM, was selected as one of the Indonesian delegates to the JENESYS 2025 ASEAN-Japan Students Conference, an international youth exchange forum bringing together representatives from ASEAN countries and Timor Leste in Japan.

The seven-day program will feature 77 students from 11 countries. Each country will send seven of its best representatives, selected through a rigorous selection process by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) and the Japanese Embassy. Gastin is one of seven Indonesian students who will depart with the spirit of sharing their innovations and inspiration on the international stage.

In addition to Gastin, six other students were selected to represent Indonesia at JENESYS 2025. These include Maharani Wijayanti (Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology), Anindita Primasanti Sugito (Gadjah Mada University), Gracia Angela Yohan (University of Indonesia), Moch Rizal Bayu Bakti Nugroho (King Abdulaziz University), Rizqullah Aryaputra Piliang, and Muhammad Fadhil Diandra (Indonesian Defense University).

“I am honored to represent Indonesia and ULM in this international forum. As a delegate, I want to demonstrate that Indonesian youth are capable of conveying their aspirations and best ideas on global issues,” said Gastin.

At the conference, Gastin was selected to present an innovation on the topic of “Climate Change and Disaster Management,” alongside a delegation from Gadjah Mada University (UGM). Based on her research background and activities in environmental innovation, Gastin was chosen to contribute to the development of a joint project focused on addressing climate change and disaster mitigation in the ASEAN region.

Since the beginning of his studies, Gastin has demonstrated his concern for environmental issues through various research activities and scientific competitions. These include the idea for underground water reservoirs he proposed during the National Student Science Week (PIMNAS), as well as research on a rinse-free soap developed to help communities in disaster-affected areas.

“From that experience, I learned a lot about the importance of innovation and community involvement. In Japan, I will be presenting a special topic on wetlands in South Kalimantan, particularly their relationship to the spread of disease and the impact of climate change,” he explained.

In addition to the conference, participants will also stay with a Japanese family for two to three days to learn about the local culture and participate in a cultural exchange session between the two countries. Gastin plans to introduce sasirangan cloth and Banjar culture as a form of cultural diplomacy from South Kalimantan.

Gastin’s participation in the JENESYS 2025 program is clear evidence that ULM students possess global competitiveness and capacity. During his studies, Gastin actively participated in various organizations, scientific events, and competitions, from the national to international levels. In 2023, Gastin won first place as ULM’s representative in the National Student Selection (Pilmapres).

Furthermore, Gastin was selected as an IISMA awardee to Malaysia in 2023 and participated in a student exchange program in Thailand hosted by Harvard in 2024. During his studies at ULM, Gastin achieved at least 71 outstanding achievements, both academic and non-academic, both nationally and internationally.

These various achievements demonstrate Lambung Mangkurat University’s commitment to fostering and encouraging the development of the interests, talents, and potential of its academic community so that they can contribute at various levels, both nationally and internationally. This commitment is also demonstrated through its support for outstanding graduates, one of whom is Gastin, who is currently pursuing a zero-fee medical professional program (coass).

“We always provide support to students who excel and dare to take on roles at the global level. Activities like this align with ULM’s spirit of producing graduates with an international outlook and a spirit of service,” said ULM Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmad, S.E., M.Si.

Through this achievement, Lambung Mangkurat University hopes that more students will be inspired to take bold steps, bring ideas, and bring honor to the nation in international forums.
