ULM Faculty of Agriculture Holds Public Lecture: Discussing the Australian Buffalo Industry and Its Implications for Indonesia

Banjarbaru, October 20, 2025 – The Faculty of Agriculture, Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM), held a public lecture entitled “The Australian Buffalo Industry: Implications for Live Buffalo Imports, Feedlotting, and Meat Processing in Indonesia” on Monday, October 20, 2025, at Supardi Hall 1, ULM Faculty of Agriculture. The event featured Dr. Ross Ainsworth, BVSc., CEO of the Northern Australia Buffalo Association, as the keynote speaker.
In his presentation, Dr. Ainsworth discussed the development of the buffalo industry in Australia, the live buffalo import system, and opportunities for collaboration in the fattening and meat processing sectors in Indonesia. According to him, the potential for cooperation between Australia and Indonesia in the buffalo farming sector is enormous, particularly in improving supply chain efficiency and implementing modern fattening technologies.
“Indonesia has great potential as both a market and a partner in developing a sustainable tropical buffalo industry,” he said. The event was moderated by Henggi Apedro, S.Pt., M.Sc., a lecturer from the Department of Animal Husbandry, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (ULM).
In his remarks, Henggi emphasized the importance of activities like this in broadening students’ knowledge of international livestock practices and opportunities for international collaboration in the livestock sector.
In addition to the public lecture, the event also included the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the Faculty of Agriculture, represented by the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Ir. Akhmad Rizalli Saidy, S.P., M.Agr.Sc., Ph.D., IPM., and the Northern Australia Buffalo Association, also represented by Dr. Ross Ainsworth, BVSC., as CEO.
The signing of this MoA marks the first step in a collaboration between the two institutions in the areas of research, education, and development of the livestock industry, particularly related to buffalo management and stewardship. It is hoped that this collaboration will open new opportunities for Indonesian students and researchers to engage in international academic and research activities.
Through this activity, participants, consisting of students, lecturers, and livestock practitioners, are expected to gain broader insights into the production systems and management of the buffalo industry, while also strengthening the collaborative network between Indonesia and Australia in developing a sustainable livestock sector.
