Yogyakarta – Hilarius 2024 International Scientific Essay Competition is a scientific essay competition held by Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). This event provides an opportunity for students and pupils from all over the world to compete in writing essays related to scientific, social, technological, environmental issues, and other globally relevant fields.
Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) through Nursing Study Program students Dwi Cahyaning Arum & Rosyifa Adela SB also participated in the competition which was held for three days, namely October 4-6, 2024. They participated in the international scientific essay competition branch which was opened in June online and succeeded in winning the 1ST Runner Up position of Hilarius 2024. This achievement was received after a series of qualifying in the semifinals and continued offline at Universitas Gadjah Mada by presenting essay ideas/concepts.
Through an essay entitled “DOPE (Disaster Response Empowerment): Landslide Preparedness For Ex-Mined Land In The Meratus Region Of Kalimantan Based On Roy Adaptation Model”, Dwi and Rosyifa tried to raise the issue of community empowerment in dealing with natural disasters and pre-hospital education.
“The content of our work is the empowerment of the Meratus community in the former mining area in landslide disaster preparedness based on the Roy Adaptation theory which aims to make the community independent in preventing, overcoming, and adapting to circumstances,” said Dwi.
Through the ideas and programs they have poured out, it is also hoped that they can be applied to other locations and disasters that are continuous in nature.
“The creative idea contained in our idea is to create a 7-day educational program consisting of 3 stages, namely Pre Stage, Core Stage, and Post Stage with the output of the program in the form of the formation of a Disaster Response Community whose members are the local Meratus community.” She added
Dwi Cahyaning Arum admitted that in preparing for this competition, his team was guided by the best lecturer from the Nursing Study Program, namely Ners Bernadetta Germia A., S.Kep., M.Kep. who guided them from the beginning of making the essay script until they qualified for the final round. This preparation was carried out for approximately 2 months. However, the challenge came from the language of instruction which required them to use English.
“Because this competition is international, we must use good and correct English in essay scripts, presentations, and FGDs.” Dwi said
Their experience competing in this international competition was certainly a memorable moment where they were faced with great teams from various major universities in Indonesia, both from medical, nursing, and midwifery study programs. Not only that, the competition was not only filled with competitions, but also fun activities that eliminated fatigue such as cultural night and city tour activities.
