Barito Kuala – The Team of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka Terpadu (MBKT) in collaboration with the Language and Language Education Unit of Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) invited international students from Iloilo Science and Technology (ISAT) University of the Philippines to the proboscis monkey conservation area and wetland ecosystem on Curiak Island on Saturday (April 11, 2026). This visit was conducted as part of an International Community Service (PKM Internasional) program with students from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) of ULM.

Themed “Mangrove Planting for Environmental Sustainability,” this activity is a concrete form of international community service focused on ecosystem preservation in the coastal area of Curiak Island. The Head of the MKBT FKIP ULM, Raisa Fadila, M.Pd., stated that this collaboration represents a concrete step in preserving the environment.

“This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to addressing global environmental challenges, particularly in preserving mangrove ecosystems, which are crucial for the sustainability of coastal areas,” she said.

The activity began with a technical briefing by Dr. Amalia Rezeki, Head of the Proboscis Monkey Conservation Center, who explained the proboscis monkey habitat, mangrove planting techniques, and the importance of post-planting care. Participants then worked together to plant mangrove seedlings in coastal areas affected by abrasion and environmental degradation.

The Head of the Language Center at ULM, Dr. Noor Eka Chandra, added that this activity not only focused on environmental action but also strengthened cross-cultural learning.

“In addition to ecosystem restoration, this activity also provided a learning space for international students to learn about the local language and context, particularly regarding wetland ecosystems,” he explained.

Curiak Island itself is known for its high biodiversity, but faces serious challenges due to abrasion and human activities. By planting mangrove seedlings, participants contributed to strengthening the island’s natural barrier, sequestering carbon, and protecting the habitat of flora and fauna.

Following the planting, the activity continued with observations of the proboscis monkey habitat, enriching participants’ understanding of the importance of ecosystem-based conservation.

Through this activity, Lambung Mangkurat University affirms its role as an educational institution actively building global collaborations while providing real solutions to environmental issues. The synergy between ULM and ISAT U is expected to inspire more parties to become involved in sustainable environmental conservation efforts.
