Banjarbaru – Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) continues to strengthen its research capacity and scientific services by holding a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the Initiation of the Development of a Genomics and Forensics Laboratory at the ULM Integrated Laboratory Unit (UPA), Banjarbaru, on Thursday (April 2, 2026).

This activity featured Senior Commissioner of Police (Ret.) Drs. Putut Tjahjo Widodo, DfM., M.Si., a practitioner and expert in molecular biology, who delivered a presentation entitled “Forensic Laboratory Transformation: Integration of Genomics and Scientific Evidence.” The FGD aimed to gather strategic input and recommendations from experts on the development of a genomics-based forensic laboratory integrated with scientific evidence.

Head of the ULM Integrated Laboratory Unit (UPA), Dr. rer. nat. apt. In his remarks, Liling Triyasmono, M.Sc., stated that the development of the genomics laboratory is a strategic step to expand the laboratory’s role, both in testing services and research.

He explained that this development is also supported by a collaborative initiative between ULM, the Integrated Laboratory, and the South Kalimantan Regional Police, particularly in the field of forensic DNA. Furthermore, the laboratory is planned to be equipped with various state-of-the-art equipment, such as gene sequencing technology, paternity testing, and DNA analysis capable of predicting potential diseases and supporting treatment planning.

“We hope the development of this laboratory will have a broad impact, not only for the ULM academic community, but also for the community. This laboratory is open to collaboration and research utilization, including a subsidy scheme for researchers who wish to develop studies in the fields of genomics and forensics,” he said.

The development of the genomics and forensics laboratory at the ULM Laboratory is a strategic step in strengthening ULM’s research and innovation capacity. This effort also represents the university’s commitment to delivering superior research that is relevant to the needs of the times.

Through this FGD, Lambung Mangkurat University emphasized its role as an impactful campus that not only develops science but also provides research-based solutions to address societal needs and future technological developments.
