ULM Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Students Win 1 Gold and 3 Bronze Medals at the 2nd ISC 2026 Kuala Lumpur
Five students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) have once again achieved impressive achievements on the international stage. In the 2nd International Student Competition 2026 (2nd ISC 2026), organized by the International Student Competition in collaboration with CEM Universiti Putra Malaysia, the ULM students won 1 Gold Medal and 3 Bronze Medals in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on February 14–15, 2026.
The Bronze Medals were won for their work “BASUMANGAT: Fast Dissolving Film as a Solution for Diabetic Cure in Wetland Communities” and “SANTAR: Nano-Pastilles Innovation From Kelakai Leaves.” Both innovations were initiated by undergraduate Pharmacy students: Laila Mayangsari, Afifah Allisya, and Ira Qadriah. BASUMANGAT offers complementary diabetes therapy based on flavonoids from the balangeran plant for communities in the wetlands of Kalimantan, while SANTAR presents a nano gummy innovation made from kelakai leaves to support stunting reduction towards Indonesia Emas 2045.
The Gold Medal was won by the scientific paper entitled “SEED UP: Energy Gel from Cempedak Seed in Eco-Friendly Packaging” by Nurhayatus Syifa Kamilah (PSPPA ULM) and Afifah Allisya. This innovation processes cempedak seeds into an environmentally friendly energy gel in bioplastic packaging, providing a sustainable functional food solution.
Another Bronze Medal was won by the scientific paper entitled “Development of a Herbal Nanospray Inhaler Based on Blumea balsamifera” by Nurhayatus Syifa Kamilah and Natalino Mahaka. This work develops a nanospray inhaler based on balik angin leaf essential oil as a supportive therapy for lung cancer using a Green Technology and SDGs approach.
The competition began with essay submissions in November–December 2025. Successful participants were announced on December 25, followed by the creation of scientific posters, which were submitted by January 15, 2026. Ultimately, the finalists presented their work live before an international panel of judges.
According to Nurhayatus Syifa Kamilah, this competition trains students to be more competitive, improves their English communication skills, strengthens teamwork, and broadens their cross-cultural horizons through interactions with students from various countries.
She also stated that this success is inseparable from the intensive mentoring of lecturers from the Pharmacy study program and the Pharmacist Professional Education Study Program (PSPPA) at ULM, from topic selection and essay writing to poster design, presentation practice, and technical preparation for departure.
This achievement underscores ULM’s commitment to continuously encouraging students to excel at the global level. With targeted academic support and facilities, ULM is optimistic that more innovations will emerge from this green campus—inspiring, impactful, and bringing honor to Indonesia on the global stage.
