ULM Prepares Prospective Teachers with an International Outlook Through SEA-Teacher

Banjarmasin – Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting the internationalization of education by preparing students to be able to participate globally. Through a team of lecturers from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), ULM is holding a Community Service Program (PkM) in the form of training to improve communication and adaptation skills for FKIP students in preparation for the SEA-Teacher Program.

The program, which runs from June to September 2025, is implemented under the 2025 Compulsory Lecturer Service Program (PDWA) and is intended for ULM FKIP students interested in participating in the SEA-Teacher Program, a student exchange program for prospective teachers in the Southeast Asia region coordinated by SEAMEO. Fifteen students were selected to participate in the training after a selection process based on commitment and motivation.

Emma Rosana Febriyanti, Head of the ULM FKIP PkM Team, explained that this program was designed to address the main challenges students often face when participating in international programs, particularly regarding English communication skills and readiness to adapt to a multicultural educational environment. She stated that ULM FKIP students have great potential to compete internationally, but require thorough and focused preparation. This training is presented as a form of comprehensive training to better prepare students for the dynamics of cross-border learning.

The training focuses on three main aspects: strengthening English communication, cultural adaptation, and developing soft skills. In the communication aspect, students are equipped with speaking, public speaking, microteaching, and developing lesson plans and academic reports in English through role-playing, storytelling, debates, and teaching simulations. Meanwhile, strengthening cultural adaptation is carried out through an introduction to the host country’s education system, cross-cultural learning simulations, and discussions with SEA-Teacher alumni and experienced teachers.

In line with the needs of global learning, ULM also equips participants with skills in utilizing educational technology. Students were trained in using a Learning Management System (LMS), interactive presentation media, and various digital learning applications commonly used in international schools.

Raisa Fadilla, a member of the ULM Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) PkM Team, added that all participants received intensive mentoring from mentor lecturers throughout the program. This mentoring was conducted periodically to monitor the development of students’ language skills, teaching readiness, and cultural adaptation. Evaluation results through pre-tests, post-tests, and teaching simulations showed significant improvements in students’ self-confidence and communication skills, as well as their readiness to participate in international programs.

Through the involvement of lecturers from across ULM’s FKIP study programs, this activity emphasized Lambung Mangkurat University’s active role in supporting the Independent Learning Campus (MBKM) policy and preparing prospective educators with a global perspective. This effort is part of ULM’s strategy to produce graduates who are adaptable, competent, and ready to contribute internationally.
