ULM Statistics Corner Education Discusses Writing Popular Articles Based on Data

BANJARBARU – Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) and the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of South Kalimantan Province held a collaborative ULM Statistics Corner Education event themed “Sharing Knowledge: Writing Popular Articles Using Statistical Data” in the Hall of Building II, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, ULM Banjarbaru, Saturday (November 22, 2025).

This activity is part of the BPS Goes to Campus program, an initiative to improve data literacy in higher education while strengthening synergy between academia and national statistical institutions.

The event was attended by ULM and BPS South Kalimantan leaders, including the Dean of FMIPA ULM Drs. Abdul Gafur, M.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., Vice Rector IV Dr. Ir. Yusuf Azis, M.Sc., Head of BPS South Kalimantan Province Mukhamad Mukhanif, and Najwa Dauli, Associate Expert Computer Technician and Head of the Statistics Corner Team. Participants were students of the Statistics Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM).

Two main topics were presented in this activity:

1. BPS Goes to Campus by Hakiki Sandhika Raja
2. Writing Popular Articles Using Statistical Data by Budhi Fatanza Wiratama

Through the presentation and interactive discussion, participants were encouraged to understand the importance of statistical data in the development of popular scientific articles, academic research, and evidence-based policymaking. This activity also provided insight into the strategic role of BPS as an official data provider in the digital era and the opportunities for student contributions to address the challenges of big data and national statistical transformation.

The Head of BPS South Kalimantan, Mukhamad Mukhanif, emphasized BPS’s commitment to maintaining integrity and improving service quality in realizing a Clean and Serving Bureaucratic Region (WBBM). He hoped that the collaboration with ULM would expand data literacy among students and lecturers.

Meanwhile, ULM, through the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the Statistics Corner team, emphasized the importance of activities like this in strengthening student competencies, particularly in data analysis and scientific communication. The ULM-BPS collaboration is expected to provide a platform for developing statistical expertise while supporting the Tri Dharma of Higher Education.

The event concluded with a discussion on the evaluation and plans to strengthen the collaboration between ULM and BPS regarding the development of the ULM Statistics Corner. This collaboration demonstrates ULM’s commitment to providing education that adapts to the needs of the data era, while also preparing a young generation with statistical skills and readiness to contribute to national development.
