Livestock Waste Processing Training: ULM Boosts Local Economy Through Green Innovation

Banjar Regency — The Student Organization Capacity Building Program (PPK Ormawa) Team of the IAAS LC of Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) once again demonstrated its commitment to community empowerment. This time, they held an innovative training titled “Utilizing Livestock Byproducts to Improve the Local Economy” in Mandiangin Timur Village, Karang Intan District, Banjar Regency on Sunday (September 28, 2025).

This training aimed to provide education and practical training to village residents on how to process livestock waste into economically valuable products. The main resource person for this activity was Ida Widiansyah, an alumnus of the ULM Agricultural Industrial Technology study program and an experienced agricultural practitioner.

In her presentation, titled “From Manure to Green Gold and Clean Energy: Innovation in Livestock Waste Processing,” Ida explained that livestock waste such as manure, urine, and leftover feed is not a problem, but rather an under-utilized resource.

“Livestock waste is often considered a source of environmental problems, but if processed properly, it can become a new source of income,” explained Ida.

The training, attended by various community members, including livestock farmers and housewives, focused on two main innovations. In the first innovation, Ida explained a simple and efficient technique for processing livestock manure and urine into ‘green gold’ or liquid organic fertilizer (POC).

The second innovation presented was utilizing waste to generate clean energy through biogas technology. Ida explained that livestock manure can be processed into methane gas, which can be used as an alternative energy source for cooking or lighting. She also explained other waste utilization methods, such as processing leftover feed into alternative feed and cultivating maggots from livestock manure as a source of protein.

“This activity can provide a solution to the waste problem in our village. Residents not only learn how to manage waste, but can also utilize it as a new source of income,” said the Head of Mandiangin Timur Village.

The Head of the PPK Ormawa IAAS LC ULM Team, Zaifan Huaidi, stated that this program demonstrates their commitment to the environment and community welfare.

“We want to prove that waste is not a problem, but rather an opportunity that can be optimized,” he said.

The activity was enthusiastically received by the participants, who actively interacted and asked questions. They felt they had gained new knowledge that was highly relevant to their daily lives as farmers and livestock breeders. It is hoped that the knowledge gained will not stop here, but will continue to be developed for the sustainable advancement of the village economy.
