ULM Presents Organic Fertilizer Production Practice in Karang Intan Village
MARTAPURA – The Student Representative Council of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (DPM FKIK) of Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) once again held an environmental class as part of the Student Organization Capacity Building Program (PPK Ormawa). In this second event, the community of Karang Intan Village, Banjar Regency, was invited to practice making organic fertilizer from household waste on Wednesday (August 27, 2025).
Themed “Green Action: Process Waste, Fertilize Nature,” the event ran from noon until late afternoon and was attended by local residents, particularly those involved in agriculture. Participants not only received material but also gained hands-on experience in processing organic waste into fertilizer that is beneficial for soil fertility.
The class was divided into three sessions. The first presented material on an introduction to organic waste and types of fertilizer. The second included practical sessions on making organic fertilizer using waste brought from their homes. The third session was an interactive discussion session, where the community shared their experiences in managing household waste in their neighborhoods.
As a resource person, Riza Adrianoor Saputra, a lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture at ULM, emphasized the importance of a basic understanding of waste types before processing.
“Organic waste such as food, leaves, and agricultural waste is not actually waste, but rather a resource that can be processed into fertilizer to enrich the soil,” he said.
He also explained that fertilizer processing requires sorting, shredding, draining, and fermentation to achieve optimal results and be ready for use.
The residents’ enthusiasm was evident through their active participation in bringing organic waste from home to be processed together. The discussion was also lively, with many questions about effective ways to manage household waste.
The organic fertilizer produced from this activity is not only intended for personal use but is also directed towards becoming a business product with economic value. Thus, this program is expected to raise public awareness about the importance of waste management while also creating additional income opportunities for the residents of Karang Intan Village.
