Impactful Community Service Program: ULM Students Introduce Maggot Cultivation to Empower the Binawara Village Community
TANAH BUMBU – Students participating in the Thematic Community Service Program (KKN) from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) at Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) educated residents of Binawara Village, Kusan Hulu District, Tanah Bumbu Regency, about maggot cultivation as a solution for managing organic waste and providing an economically valuable alternative feed. The activity took place at the Binawara weekly market on Friday (August 1, 2025), with livestock farmers, village youth, and local village officials in attendance.
This program is part of ULM’s community service program, realizing its Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education) and supporting the development of village potential through environmentally friendly innovations. The students presented the use of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae, or maggots, as a highly nutritious alternative feed for chickens and fish.
Solihin, spokesperson for the ULM KKN students, explained that maggot cultivation technology can be a strategic step in reducing organic waste while opening up opportunities to increase community income.
“We want the community to learn about and practice maggot cultivation because it’s easy to implement and has a high market value,” he said.
The activity included not only material presentations but also practical field sessions. Residents were invited to observe firsthand the process of creating maggot breeding media, cultivation techniques, and harvest utilization.
The community’s enthusiasm was evident in the many questions they asked, with some even expressing their readiness to start cultivating maggots independently. Mukhtar, the Secretary of Binawara Village, welcomed the program.
“This knowledge is very beneficial for our community, especially as the majority of residents here have livestock businesses,” he said.
Through this activity, ULM hopes that Binawara Village can become an example of a village that successfully manages organic waste sustainably and independently. The ULM FPIK Thematic Community Service Program (KKN) is expected to continue to be a catalyst for innovation and community empowerment, especially in coastal and rural areas.
