Impactful Community Service Program: ULM FPIK Students Introduce Milkfish Dragon Legs Through GEMARIKAN in Muara Pagatan Village
TANAH BUMBU – Students participating in the Impactful Thematic Community Service Program (KKN) from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) of Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) initiated a Movement to Promote Fish Eating (GEMARIKAN) with the theme “Healthy Fish, Sustainable Seas: From the Coast to Indonesia” in the Muara Pagatan Village Office Hall on Wednesday (July 31, 2025).
The event was attended by the Family Welfare Movement (PKK), Human Development Cadres (KPM), the Field Extension Center (BPL), and village health workers. The main focus was to increase fish consumption in the community, especially among children who are often reluctant to eat fish.
As a breakthrough, ULM FPIK students introduced a creative milkfish-based dragon leg snack, a nutritious snack with a more appealing shape and taste for children. Beyond cooking, the students also provided education on nutrition, economic benefits, and the importance of preserving the ocean for the sustainability of coastal resources.
The Head of the Muara Pagatan Village Family Welfare Movement (PKK), Agustina, expressed her appreciation for the ULM students’ efforts, which she believes directly benefit the community.
“This activity is very helpful in broadening the mothers’ knowledge of fish processing. Hopefully, it will involve children and teenagers, so they can get used to eating fish and caring for the ocean from an early age,” she said.
Through GEMARIKAN, ULM plays an active role in connecting academic knowledge with local needs. In addition to improving community skills in processing healthy fish, this activity also raises awareness of the importance of consuming local fish and preserving marine ecosystems.
With this synergy between the campus and coastal communities, ULM affirms its commitment to contributing to food security and sustainable development, in line with the university’s role in community service.
