Banjarmasin – The ULM student team won the Bronze Medal and the Best Video award at the 2nd International Youth Conference (IYC) held in Malaysia. This proud achievement adds to the list of achievements achieved by students of Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) on the international stage.

This event is an annual international conference that brings together students and academics from all over Southeast Asia and other countries. The 2nd International Youth Conference was organized by Nusantara Muda in collaboration with the Postgraduate Entrepreneurship and Marketing Development Center, Universiti Putra Malaysia, and the World Association of Young Scientists (WAYS). This conference aims to improve networking between students at the national and international levels, as well as facilitate the exchange of ideas and scientific collaboration.

In this competition, the team led by M. Naufal Yusuf Shabhan, Andi Insanul Kamil, and Jeni Amalia Kartika raised a scientific paper themed “Genetic Preservation of Alabio Ducks as South Kalimantan Germplasm”. The work produced by the students of the S1 Animal Husbandry study program comprehensively discusses the origin and characteristics of the alabio duck, the causes of the decline in pure genetics, and strategic solutions that can be applied to maintain the sustainability of the superior germplasm of the region.

Long preparations were carried out by Naufal, Insan, and Jeni from March to early May. This process began with brainstorming to determine the topic, then continued with discussions with expert lecturers, data collection, essay writing, and the submission process. After being declared as finalists, the team continued preparations by taking care of administration, making funding proposals, and practicing presentations in various languages.

“This is our first experience participating in an international competition, so we felt nervous during the presentation. However, from this process we learned a lot,” said Insan.

ULM provided full support in the form of academic assistance by Azhar Syafiq Imanullah, S.Pt., M.Sc as a supervisor and administrative assistance from the rectorate. This support also helped the team in preparing everything needed until departure to Malaysia.

More than just a competition, participation in IYC opened up new insights and experiences for the participants.

“We learned a lot, especially in terms of discipline, efficiency, and accuracy. We also had the opportunity to interact with students from various countries as well as local Malaysians, and learned to use three languages at once: Malay, English, and Mandarin,” explained Insan in an interview.

This success is proof that ULM students are able to compete on the international stage and bring the good name of the institution to the global level. Hopefully this achievement can inspire other students to continue to work and dare to step into a wider arena.
