BANJARMASIN – Universitas Lambung Mangkurat (ULM) showed active support for strengthening the role of mosques in community development through the presence of Vice Rector III, Dr. Muhamad Rusmin Nuryadin, S.E., M.Si at the inauguration of the Regional Management of the Indonesian Mosque Council (PW DMI) South Kalimantan for the 2024–2029 period. The event took place at the Mahligai Pancasila Building, Banjarmasin, on Monday (5/26/2025).

ULM’s presence in this activity is real evidence of collaboration between universities and religious institutions in encouraging mosques as centers for character building, social, and community education.

Mosques have great potential to become strategic spaces in shaping civilization. ULM is ready to synergize with DMI to make mosques centers for learning, religious literacy, and inclusive social development.

General Chairperson of the DMI Central Leadership, H.M. Jusuf Kalla, on this occasion, was officially present and inaugurated the new management. In his speech, Jusuf Kalla emphasized the importance of expanding the function of the mosque from merely a place of worship to a center for social, economic, educational, and environmental activities.

“The mosque should be the epicenter of the people’s activities. The DMI management must actively manage the mosque so that it can provide real benefits to the community,” said the former 10th and 12th Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia.

Meanwhile, H. Anwar Hadimi, who was inaugurated as the General Chairperson of the PW DMI South Kalimantan, expressed his commitment to carry out the mandate seriously. He emphasized the importance of making the mosque a child-friendly, environmentally friendly public space, and able to contribute in the social and economic fields.

“We want to popularize the mosque as a place for active and open community development. The mosque must be able to be a place for the growth of good values, not only spiritual, but also social,” he said.

The inauguration ceremony was also combined with the presentation of trophies and awards to the winners of the competition between mosque youth throughout South Kalimantan, as a form of appreciation for the role of the younger generation in prospering the mosque.

With the presence of ULM in a strategic forum like this, it is hoped that cross-sector cooperation will be formed that can encourage the role of mosques as agents of social change, while strengthening the contribution of universities in the development of the community and regions.
