ULM Observer Highlights Public Ethics in the Polemic of School Farewells at Night Entertainment Venues

Banjarmasin – Academics from Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) have voiced their concerns over the selection of night entertainment venues as locations for student farewells. This phenomenon is considered to ignore public ethics and is not in line with educational values.

ULM education observer, Reja Pahlevi, emphasized that although according to the rules there is no violation because it is only based on a circular, morally, such a location is very inappropriate for school activities.

“School farewells are important moments and should have an educational nuance. Holding it at a nightclub, even during the day, still raises serious ethical issues,” said Reja.

The latest case occurred at SMAN 1 Sungai Tabuk, Banjar Regency, which held a farewell for grade 12 students at one of the night entertainment venues in Banjarmasin. This activity drew criticism from the public, especially parents of students who felt the location was inappropriate.

Responding to this phenomenon, ULM anthropologist, Nasrullah, said that the shift in school farewell culture now tends to be more glamorous and seems elitist. Simple traditions such as scribbling on clothes or convoys are now starting to be replaced by parties in closed and luxurious buildings.

“There is a change in perspective on farewells. Unfortunately, without strict regulations and effective socialization, schools feel free to choose places that are not even in accordance with norms,” explained Nasrullah.

Meanwhile, the government through the South Kalimantan Education and Culture Office has actually issued Circular Letter Number 400.3.1/0810/Disdikbud/2025, which prohibits farewells in hotels or entertainment venues. The letter also emphasizes that the event should not burden parents and be carried out simply.

ULM, as a higher education institution in South Kalimantan, encourages farewells to return to their basic essence—namely as a reflection of education, not a luxurious celebration event that actually causes social and ethical polemics.
