Banjarmasin, April 21, 2025 – A total of 106 professional program students from the Dentistry Professional Education Study Program (PSPPDGPP) and the Doctor’s Professional Education Study Program (PSPPDPP) of Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) participated in the Interprofessional Collaboration (IPC) Professional Phase 2 activity which took place on April 21–26, 2025 at the Gusti Hasan Aman Dental and Oral Hospital (RSGM GHA).

This IPC activity is the result of a collaboration between the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK) ULM together with the Education Coordination Committee (KOMKORDIK) of RSGM GHA, and is designed to strengthen the competence of professional students in working as a team across scientific disciplines.

In her opening remarks, Suparni Puji Lestari, Head of Education and Training Section of RSGM GHA, emphasized the importance of this activity as part of the responsibility of teaching hospitals in producing competent and collaborative health workers.

“This is one of the mandatory programs and a real form of collaboration between educational institutions and major teaching hospitals. Through IPC, participants can hone their ability to work together in handling cases comprehensively and on target,” said Suparni.

According to Dr. Debby Saputera, drg., Sp.Pros., as the Head of PSPPDGPP Study Program, the importance of IPC lies in the fact that each health worker brings different expertise, experience, and approaches in treating patients.

“All health workers have the same goal, namely patient safety. IPC helps reduce errors and improve the quality of service. Now the service approach has shifted from provider-centered care to patient-centered care, where patients are the center of the entire service process,” he explained.

During the six days of implementation, participants were accompanied by academic and clinical preceptors from FKG ULM, FKIK ULM, RSUD Ulin, and RSGM GHA. They are involved in various activities, such as:

  • Bed Side Teaching;
  • Case Discussion;
  • Presentation with Experts;
  • and Home Visit.

Through these activities, students not only sharpen their clinical skills but also hone their communication skills and joint decision-making in a team.

Dr. Debby said that the main objective of IPC is to improve the quality of health services, patient safety, and better treatment outcomes. In addition, IPC provides real benefits in the form of teamwork efficiency, reduced medical errors, and increased satisfaction among both patients and health workers.

“In the implementation of IPC, the involvement of all professions is needed to obtain a joint agreement in resolving complex (patient) health problems, this can be in the form of promotive or preventive efforts, and not ignoring the curative and rehabilitative approaches,” explained Dr. Debby.

With this approach, health institutions are expected to be able to provide more comprehensive, humane, and patient safety-oriented services. In the future, the implementation of IPC is expected to be a serious concern for policy makers in the health sector to continue to be encouraged through the preparation of strategic policies and increasing the capacity of medical personnel in various service lines.
