Banjarmasin – In an effort to strengthen the academic community’s understanding of the importance of research protection, the Center for Downstream Research Results and the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Center of Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) held a workshop entitled “The Role of Patents, Trademarks, and Integrated Circuit Layout Designs (IPR) in Downstream Research and Innovation” on Thursday (11/13/2025) at the Lecture Theater of the Faculty of Economics and Business, ULM.

The event was attended by 150 participants, including lecturers, researchers, and students from both ULM and outside the university. The aim was to increase knowledge regarding strategies for protecting and managing patents, trademarks, and IPR as an integral part of downstream research results at universities.

Rector Prof. Dr. H. Ahmad Alim Bachri, S.E., M.Si., expressed his appreciation for the activities carried out by the Research Institute for Research and Innovation (LPPM) and the IPR Center in realizing ULM’s hopes and aspirations to encourage patent development at the university.

“We hope that in the future, the enthusiasm and motivation of our fellow ULM academics to develop themselves in the field of patents and beyond will be even greater,” said the Rector.

The Chief Executive, Prof. Ir. Muthia Elma, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., explained that workshops like this are also frequently held to provide output to support and improve the Sinta ranking.

“Through this workshop, more than 30 industrial designs have been registered under the name of the ULM Institute of Technology (LPPM),” she said.

The Head of LPPM, Prof. Sunardi, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., echoed this sentiment. He expressed his hope that this event would raise awareness among the ULM academic community about the importance of protecting Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) as a valuable asset resulting from research and innovation. It would also encourage the creation of more patents and registered trademarks from the research results of ULM lecturers and students, so that the resulting research would have commercial value and high competitiveness.

“Hopefully, with this event, like yesterday’s, there will be many IPR proposals, not just simple patents but also other types of IPR, as they are also very necessary for the development of our institution,” he said.

In addition to the presentation sessions, the workshop also featured interactive discussions and direct consultations regarding the IPR registration process, so participants could understand concrete steps to secure their innovations.

Present as expert speakers were Dr. Nanik Astuti Rahman, S.T., M.T., Rizky Mardiyah, S.T., and Umi Yuniati, S.T., who shared in-depth insights regarding the legality process, protection, and potential commercialization of innovative works through IPR schemes.

This activity is part of ULM’s commitment to building a research culture that is productive, innovative, and has a real impact on development and community welfare.
