ULM Strengthens Women’s Legal Literacy Through Mediation House Program in Three Sub-districts

Banjarmasin – Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM), through its Faculty of Law, implemented the 2025 Lecturer Compulsory Service Program (PDWA) with the theme “Increasing Women’s Participation in Mediation Houses in Banjarmasin City.” The activity took place on Wednesday (August 27, 2025) in three sub-districts: Antasan Besar, Pemurus Luar, and Sungai Baru, each lasting one day.

The Head of the ULM Faculty of Law Community Service Team, Mulyani Zulaeha, explained that this program is a concrete manifestation of the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, particularly in the area of community service.

“This activity aligns with the enactment of Banjarmasin City Regional Regulation Number 2 of 2025 concerning the Facilitation of Mediation Implementation. This regulation emphasizes the importance of the existence of a Mediation House in each sub-district as a space for conflict resolution through deliberation,” she explained.

According to Mulyani, the involvement of women in the Mediation House is strategic because it provides equal opportunities for men and women in facilitating dispute resolution in the community.

“The goal of this activity is to develop women’s capacity so they can take an active role as mediators. Women have excellent communication skills, which can be a crucial asset in facilitating peaceful dispute resolution,” she added.

The implementation of the PDWA also serves as a means of strengthening legal literacy and social networks for women in Banjarmasin. Their presence in the mediation space is expected to create a more conducive, safe, and harmonious urban environment.

“Women’s participation in mediation is a long-term social investment. This not only helps resolve conflicts but also makes women agents of change in society,” said Mulyani.

With the results of this activity demonstrating women’s readiness as facilitators, ULM affirms its role as a university committed to building community capacity through research, education, and community service.
