ULM Conducts Home Visits to Educate on Pulmonary TB in Martapura 2

Banjar – Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM), through lecturers from the Public Health Study Program, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK), implemented the Compulsory Lecturer Service Program (PDWA) titled “EDUMOM TB CARE: Prevention of Pulmonary TB in Toddlers” in the Martapura 2 Community Health Center (Puskesmas), Banjar Regency, on Thursday (July 3, 2025).

Quoting from Anis Kamela’s article in Kompasiana published on August 22, 2025, this activity focused on empowering mothers with children with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) through direct family-based education. The ULM FKIK lecturer team went directly to the respondents’ homes (home visits) to conduct personal counseling regarding TB symptoms, transmission methods, the importance of completing treatment, and simple preventative measures within the home environment.

The head of the activity, Laily Khairiyati, SKM., MPH, emphasized that strengthening the role of mothers as primary caregivers is key to controlling childhood TB. “Counselling is conducted in person to tailor it to each family’s individual circumstances. This way, education can be more targeted,” she explained.

Educational materials are provided in simple language using leaflets for easy understanding. The focus includes maintaining ventilation and air circulation, ensuring adequate lighting in children’s rooms, avoiding overcrowding, and providing nutritious food to strengthen toddlers’ immune systems.

This educational program involves lecturers from the Department of Environmental Health, Faculty of Medicine, and Medicine, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (ULM), along with students, thus becoming part of the implementation of community-based learning. In addition to promoting healthy lifestyles, this activity also seeks to reduce the social stigma surrounding TB and foster family involvement in supporting their child’s treatment process.

Assessment results showed a significant increase in participants’ understanding. The average pre-test score of 77.14 increased to 88.57 after the post-test. This demonstrates that the mothers absorbed the material well.

One participant expressed the immediate benefits of this activity. “I, who initially knew little about ventilation, now understand how it affects TB. The activity was very helpful. Thank you to the ULM team for coming to my home and explaining so patiently,” she said.

Through the EDUMOM TB CARE program, ULM hopes that this family-based education model can be developed more widely in other areas, so that more people can be helped in preventing pulmonary TB in children.
