ULM Lecturer Team Involves Youth Organizations in Waste Management Socialization in Banjarmasin
Banjarmasin – Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM), through the Lecturer Compulsory Service Program (PDWA) Team of the Business Administration Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), held a waste management socialization event with the Banjarmasin City Youth Organization (Karang Taruna). The event was held in the Banjarmasin City Youth Organization (SKKT) Hall on Saturday morning (August 16, 2025).
The PDWA Team Leader, Dr. Irwansyah, S.Sos, M.Si, explained that waste management is a critical issue with not only local but also global impacts. Banjarmasin City itself is currently facing serious problems due to the closure of the Basirih Final Disposal Site (TPA).
“Through this socialization, we want to encourage youth organizations to spearhead public awareness about the environment. Following this activity, we also plan to hold a follow-up program to raise awareness for environmental cadres at Telaga Biru in September,” said Dr. Irwansyah. Irwansyah, who is also the Head of the Career Development and Entrepreneurship Unit (UPA PKK) at ULM.
The socialization featured several speakers. The Secretary of the Banjarmasin City Environmental Agency (DLH), Wahyu Hardi Cahyo, explained the waste management program currently being implemented by the local government. Meanwhile, Atin Susanto from the Waste Bank community presented practical material on waste sorting based on the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).
Wahyu Hardi Cahyo expressed his appreciation for ULM’s involvement in addressing the waste issue in Banjarmasin.
“The waste problem cannot be handled solely by the government. The role of academics, such as those conducted by ULM, is crucial in finding joint solutions. We are ready to support future collaboration plans, including ULM’s block project. If all goes well, this model can be implemented at the village level,” he said.
The activity was well-received by participants and youth organizations. They believed that the involvement of academics provided a new perspective and concrete steps in addressing the waste problem at the community level.

Nurul Wahyuni, S.Sos., M.AB; Novia Nour Halisa, S.Si., M.Si; Noor Hidayati, S.Sos., M.AB; Devi Rusvitawati, S.Pd., MM; Muhammad Fathoni, S.Kom., MM; and two students, Muhammad Ilham and Nor Aina.
With this activity, ULM affirms its role as a university that actively implements the Tri Dharma, particularly in the area of ​​community service, while also supporting the creation of a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment.
