Impactful Community Service Program: ULM FPIK Students Introduce Clean Water Biofilter Technique to Pejala Village Residents

Tanah Bumbu – Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) has once again demonstrated its commitment to community service through the Thematic Community Service Program (KKN). A group of 10 students from the ULM Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) presented a practical solution to the clean water problem in Pejala Village, Kusan Hilir District, Tanah Bumbu Regency, by demonstrating the construction of a water biofilter system on Wednesday (August 6, 2025).

The program, themed “One Action, a Million Hopes,” is part of the application of appropriate technology in the community. The biofilter system functions to filter well or river water to make it suitable for daily use, such as bathing and washing, and to reduce the risk of diseases caused by contaminated water.

The person in charge of the activity, Ken Nessa A.B. Waoma explained that the biofilters are assembled using simple materials such as sponges, alum, activated charcoal, and eco-enzymes, arranged in a filtration container to remove dirt, odors, and bacteria.

“We see firsthand how difficult it is for people to access clean water, especially during the dry season. With this simple technology, we hope residents can more easily access safe water,” said Ken Nessa.

In addition to assembling and handing over the biofilters, the students also provided education on the importance of sanitation and how to maintain the equipment for long-term use. This activity was warmly received by the community.

The Head of Pejala Village expressed his appreciation, saying, “We are greatly helped by this program. Hopefully, this technology can continue to be used and developed together with the community.”

For ULM students, this program provides an opportunity to learn and make a real contribution in the field. They not only provide technological solutions but also build communication and collaboration with the community. This initiative aligns with one of ULM’s missions to implement the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education), particularly in the area of community service, by presenting relevant innovations that directly benefit residents.
