Banjarmasin – Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM), through the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK), has once again demonstrated its tangible contribution to supporting national programs, particularly in the area of food security. In collaboration with the South Kalimantan Regional Police (POLDA), FPIK ULM held training on snakehead fish (Channa striata) hatchery for police officers on duty.

The training began on Monday (July 21, 2025) and lasted one week in the FPIK ULM wet laboratory on the ULM Banjarbaru Campus. Fifteen South Kalimantan Regional Police personnel participated in the training, who were specially trained by a team of FPIK instructors consisting of FPIK Dean Dr. Ir. Untung Bijaksana, MP., Dr. Indira Fitriliyani, S.Pi., M.Si., and Dr. Ir. Agussyarif Hanafie, M.Si., as well as several alumni.

The material provided includes an introduction to snakehead fish biology, spawning techniques, handling larvae and fry, as well as the culture and feeding of natural feed. The entire training process is designed to equip participants with technical skills that can be immediately applied in the field.

“This training is a form of ULM’s contribution to supporting the food security program, which is now also a serious concern for the Indonesian National Police (POLRI). We welcome this collaboration as it aligns with the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education) mission,” said Dr. Untung, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) ULM.

After the training, the trained members of the South Kalimantan Regional Police (POLDA Kalsel) are scheduled to pass on the knowledge they have gained to Bhabinkamtibmas (Community Police Officers) throughout South Kalimantan. This step is expected to expand the training’s impact to rural communities as part of food security implementation efforts.

This collaboration between ULM and the South Kalimantan Regional Police emphasizes the importance of synergy between higher education institutions and law enforcement agencies in addressing national food security challenges. ULM is committed to remaining an active partner in scientific development and community empowerment in various strategic sectors.
