ULM Researches Land Suitability for Dwarf Coconut Cultivation in Tabalong

Tabalong – Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) has once again demonstrated its contribution to supporting regional agricultural development through land suitability research in Tabalong Regency. This research was conducted to support the assistance program for 5,000 dwarf coconut seedlings prepared by the Tabalong Plantation and Livestock Service (Disbunnak).

The soil research was conducted from July 11–12, 2025, in the northern region of Tabalong, and was followed by laboratory analysis. This activity aimed to determine whether the soil conditions in the area were suitable for dwarf coconut cultivation, so that the assistance program could be effective and produce optimal productivity.

Prof. Dr. Ahmad Kurnain, Professor of Soil Biogeochemistry at ULM and Head of the Research Team, explained that his team was asked to conduct a geophysical assessment of the land to be planted.

“We evaluate land suitability from a geophysical perspective. If there are indications of unsuitability, we will recommend improvements, such as adding fertilizer or cultivating the soil structure,” he explained when met at the research site.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Tabalong Plantation and Animal Husbandry Office, Soleh, emphasized the importance of this research before seed distribution.

“If distributed directly without a study, dwarf coconut production could be suboptimal. That’s why we’re collaborating with ULM to ensure this program is data-driven and produces optimal results,” he said.

The ideal soil type for dwarf coconuts is loose, sandy, has good drainage and aeration, and has a soil acidity level (pH) between 5.5 and 7.5. This research conducted by ULM is the first step to determine whether Tabalong’s soil conditions meet these criteria.

This collaboration demonstrates the importance of synergy between universities and the local government in promoting the success of science-based agricultural programs and demonstrates how ULM’s role extends beyond education to addressing real-world challenges in the community.
