World AIDS Day: PSKep FKIK ULM Holds Guest Lecture Discussing the Role of Nurses
Banjarmasin – In order to commemorate World AIDS Day which falls every December 1, the Nursing Study Program of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Lambung Mangkurat University (PSKep FKIK ULM) held a guest lecture on Thursday (11/28/2024). The guest lecture raised the theme “The Role of Nurses in HIV Prevention, Reducing Stigma, and Caring for HIV Patients to Realize the Target of Three Zero HIV 2030 in Indonesia.”
PSKep FKIK ULM presented Ners Iqbal Pramukti, S.Kep., M.Sc., PhD, from the Faculty of Nursing, Padjadjaran University, as the main speaker in this guest lecture. In her presentation, Ners Iqbal discussed the importance of the role of nurses in preventing HIV transmission, reducing stigma, and providing holistic care to HIV/AIDS patients.
Nurse Iqbal emphasized the concept of Undetectable = Untransmittable (U-U), which is the principle that HIV patients with an undetectable viral load cannot transmit the virus to others.
“This gives great hope for patients to live healthily without worrying about transmitting HIV, as long as they follow the right treatment,” he said.
He also highlighted the biggest challenge, namely the stigma and discrimination still experienced by HIV patients. “Nurses have an important role in eliminating this stigma by providing empathy-based services and education to the community,” he added.
Vice Dean for Academic Affairs of FKIK ULM, dr. Mashuri, Sp.Rad(K)RI, M.Kes., in his remarks, emphasized the strategic role of nurses as the frontline in overcoming HIV/AIDS.
“I hope that PSKep FKIK ULM students will be able to become agents of change who support the target of Zero HIV in Indonesia by 2030,” said dr. Mashuri.
This guest lecture aims to broaden the insights of ULM Nursing Study Program students about HIV/AIDS prevention, including their role as nurses in the future. In the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, nurses have an important role, especially in providing education, supporting patients psychologically, and prioritizing non-discriminatory care.
During the lecture session, students actively asked about concrete steps they could take to support the handling of HIV/AIDS from a nursing perspective. With this new knowledge, they are expected to be able to contribute to reducing stigma and increasing public awareness of HIV/AIDS.
Through this activity, PSKep FKIK ULM affirmed its commitment to supporting global efforts to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic and realize the Three Zero HIV target by 2030: Zero New HIV Infections, Zero Discrimination, and Zero AIDS-Related Deaths.
