Monitoring and Evaluation of Student Humanitarian Projects in Malaysia, FKIP ULM Plans for Sustainability

Kuala Lumpur – Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM), Deasy Arisanty on Sunday-Wednesday, 19-22 November 2023 together with the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs at ULM, Iwan Aflanie, attended a meeting with INTI International University & Colleges Malaysia as a collaborative partner of the MBKM (Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka) Humanitarian Project of the Council of State Higher Education Rector (MRPTN) in which ULM is involved. The meeting was held at the INTI campus in Kuala Lumpur. INTI International University was represented by two professors, Tezara Cionita and Lai Yin Ling.

This meeting contains an agenda for monitoring and evaluation (monev) of humanitarian project programs. This program is a program for sending students to teach in learning studios (a kind of Kejar Paket in Indonesia) in the Malaysia-Indonesia border area for children of Indonesian workers (TKI) who work in the Malaysian Peninsula region (Selangor, Kedah, Kelantan) who have not received an education worthy. FKIP ULM has sent 3 students to take part in this program, namely Muhammad Sawaluddin Wahid and Stacy Gracesia Erna Jonas from the Primary School Teacher Education (PGSD) Study Program (PS), as well as Muhammad Fajar Maulana PS Pancasila and Citizenship Education,

According to Deasy, the area where the students are placed is indeed a literacy education emergency.

“Many cannot read and write, there are even 16 year old children who are still in elementary school and cannot read and write fluently. The children also work to help their parents in the oil palm plantations so their study time is limited. Thus, the need for teachers there is urgent,” Deasy said that ULM itself, especially FKIP, will continue this program because apart from the need, it is also because this kind of program is in line with FKIP’s core as an educational campus.

“However, students who take part must really have a high social spirit because they have to teach in remote places, in study studios with minimal facilities,” she added.

The next delivery of students in this program is planned to be carried out in February 2024. This ongoing activity is a pilot project spearheaded by the University of Borneo Tarakan, then continued by the University of North Sumatra, the National Veterans Development University, Palangkaraya University, including Lambung Mangkurat University.
