ULM Strengthens the Role of Health Cadres to Prevent Anemia in Pregnant Women

Banjarmasin, 2025 – Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM), through the Compulsory Lecturer Service Program (PDWA) of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK), conducted community service activities at the Alalak Selatan Community Health Center, focusing on improving the capacity of health cadres in preventing anemia in pregnant women.

The activity, held last August, was led by Dr. dr. Renny Aditya, MKes, SpOG(K), FISQua, along with students from the Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Education Program, FKIK ULM. The goal was to strengthen health cadres’ understanding of the importance of iron for pregnant women and equip them with the skills to provide appropriate education.

“Cadres are the spearhead of health services in the community. They play a crucial role in assisting pregnant women to comply with iron consumption and maintain a healthy diet,” explained Dr. Renny.

The activity began with a pre-test to determine the cadres’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding iron consumption. This was followed by counseling using interactive discussions, Q&A sessions, and educational materials on the benefits of iron, iron-rich foods, how to take iron tablets, and how to manage side effects such as constipation or changes in stool color. The activity concluded with a post-test to measure the cadres’ understanding.

ULM believes that regularly refreshing the cadres’ knowledge is key to their ability to convey accurate information to the public, especially pregnant women. With empowered cadres, it is hoped that the incidence of anemia in pregnant women can be reduced.

“Through continuous education and measured evaluation, cadres will be better prepared to support pregnant women, resulting in a healthier and more qualified generation,” she added.

This community service program demonstrates the synergy between academics, health workers, and community cadres in strengthening maternal and child health services in South Kalimantan.
