ULM Trains Sungai Jingah Sasirangan Workers in the Use of PPE for Occupational Safety
Banjarmasin – Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM), through the Lecturer Compulsory Service Program (PDWA) Team of the Undergraduate Medical Study Program (PSKPS) of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK), provided training on the use and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to sasirangan workers in Sungai Jingah Village, Banjarmasin City.
The activity, held on Thursday (August 14, 2025), represents a concrete manifestation of ULM’s community service, specifically in supporting the improvement of occupational safety for artisans of this traditional Banjar cloth.
One of the team members, Dr. Farida Heryani, M.P.H., explained that this training was designed to introduce and familiarize sasirangan workers with the use of PPE appropriate to the type of work they perform. This is important to protect them from potential accidents and health problems while working.
“Through this training, we want workers to not only know but also become accustomed to using proper PPE. For example, pattern makers only need masks, while dyers require more protection such as protective eyewear, gloves, aprons, masks, and boots,” she explained.
This training was conducted after the PDWA FKIK ULM team conducted a field survey, which found that PPE use among sasirangan workers was still very rare. Most workers stated that they prioritized comfort, even though many had already experienced health problems due to exposure to dyes and other work processes.
In addition to providing education, the ULM team also distributed PPE to workers for immediate use. The enthusiasm was evident from both employers and sasirangan workers who attentively participated in this activity.
“We hope that in the future, the use of PPE will become a daily habit. This way, workers and employers can work together to maintain safety and health in the sasirangan production process,” added Dr. Farida.
This activity affirms Lambung Mangkurat University’s commitment to implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, especially community service, while also supporting the sustainability of the local creative industry through the implementation of better occupational safety standards.
