Banjarmasin – The Department of Pancasila and Citizenship Education (JPPKn), Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM), once again held a guest lecture as an academic activity to broaden the scientific knowledge of students and lecturers. The event took place on Wednesday, November 19th, at the FKIP ULM PPKn Laboratory, from 8:00 to 10:30 a.m. WITA (Central Indonesian Time).

On this occasion, JPPKn FKIP ULM presented an international resource person from the University of Malaya, Malaysia, Ahmad Bin Yussuf. He is an academic and researcher with expertise in Civic Education, Islamic Education, and Civic Education Studies. This guest lecture raised the theme “Citizenship Education in Islam,” which is considered relevant to current global developments, particularly in integrating Islamic values with the concept of modern citizenship.

In his presentation, Ahmad Bin Yussuf explained that the concept of citizenship from an Islamic perspective does not solely emphasize the relationship between citizens and the state, but also encompasses moral, spiritual, and social responsibility aspects. He emphasized that the values of justice (al-‘adl), deliberation (syuro), brotherhood (ukhuwah), and respect for human dignity are the ethical foundations that shape the character of citizens in Islamic tradition. He believes that the integration of these values has the potential to make a significant contribution to the development of a more humanistic, inclusive, and values-based Civic Education.

This activity received a positive response from JPPKn students, who enthusiastically participated in the discussion. Participants actively expressed their views on the relevance of Islamic values-based civic education in the context of Indonesia, a predominantly Muslim country that continues to uphold pluralism and diversity. The discussion also highlighted the importance of developing a Civics (PPKn) curriculum that accommodates an Islamic perspective without neglecting national and constitutional values.

The Head of the JPPKn FKIP ULM, Mariatul Kiptiah, in her remarks stated that the guest lecture was part of the department’s commitment to strengthening international academic networks and improving the quality of learning through the presence of experts from various countries. She hoped that the existing academic collaboration would continue, not only through guest lectures, but also through collaborative research, lecturer and student exchanges, and the development of more comprehensive teaching materials.

Overall, the guest lecture with Ahmad Bin Yussuf not only provided additional insight for participants but also opened a space for scientific dialogue regarding the development of contextual Civics Education aligned with Islamic values. The event concluded with a group photo session and the presentation of souvenirs as a token of appreciation to the speakers.
