AI Ready ASEAN at ULM: Students Learn Ethics, Privacy, and the Utilization of AI
BANJARMASIN – The Communication Studies Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM), in collaboration with the Indonesian Anti-Defamation Society (MAFINDO) of South Kalimantan, held the “AI Ready ASEAN Training Implementation” event to improve artificial intelligence (AI) literacy among students.
The event, held on Thursday (October 30, 2025) at the Lecture Building of FISIP ULM Banjarmasin, was attended by approximately 151 Communication Studies students. Through this training, participants were introduced to the basics of AI, the ethics of its use, and the application of this technology in communication and everyday life.
The Coordinator of MAFINDO South Kalimantan, Dr. Sri Astuty, S.Sos., M.Si., explained that this activity is part of the AI Ready ASEAN program, a collaborative initiative between the ASEAN Foundation and Google.org implemented in ten ASEAN countries. This program aims to equip more than 5.5 million ASEAN citizens with relevant digital skills in the era of artificial intelligence.
“Students not only learn the basic concepts of AI, but are also trained to understand ethics, privacy, security, and how to teach AI knowledge back to their environment,” said Dr. Sri Astuty. She added that participants also gain access to the Learning Management System (LMS) platform at institute.mafindo.or.id so they can continue their learning independently and earn competency certificates.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Jamaluddin Islami, the program’s PIC, stated that this collaboration is a concrete step for the university to broaden students’ horizons regarding the development of digital technology, particularly artificial intelligence.
“Through this activity, we want students to understand the benefits and risks of using AI, and to be able to utilize it ethically and responsibly,” he said.
ULM views this activity as part of the university’s commitment to strengthening digital literacy and preparing students for global technological transformation. With the active involvement of the academic community, this training is expected to be the beginning of a sustainable collaboration between ULM and MAFINDO South Kalimantan in developing an inclusive and effective AI-based learning ecosystem.
