Impactful Community Service Program: ULM FPIK Students Introduce Simple Water Filtration Technology to Coastal Residents
TANAH BUMBU – Students from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) at Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM), who are currently undertaking a Thematic Community Service Program (KKN), are providing a practical solution to the problem of clean water access in coastal areas. They demonstrated simple water filtration technology to residents of Sungai Dua Laut Village, Tanah Bumbu Regency, on Monday (August 4, 2025).
The activity was held at the village office and was enthusiastically attended by local residents. Using readily available materials, such as cotton, gravel, sand, activated charcoal, and gauze, the students demonstrated the steps to create a simple water filtration system that can filter out physical impurities and mud, and eliminate unpleasant odors.
“The purpose of this activity is to provide education and practical solutions to the community so they can process dirty water into water suitable for bathing, cooking, and washing,” explained Rio Candra Renaldi, Head of Group 8 of the ULM FPIK Thematic Community Service Program.
Before the practical, students explained the importance of maintaining the quality of water sources to prevent pollution. Residents were then invited to practice making water filters using equipment that can be assembled at home.
One resident in attendance expressed his gratitude. “We feel very helped. Now we know that local materials can be used to make water filters. This is very useful, especially during the dry season,” he said.
In addition to providing technical solutions, this activity also served as a means of strengthening relationships between students and residents. The interaction made the messages conveyed more easily accepted and remembered by the community.
Through this activity, the ULM FPIK Thematic Community Service Program students hope to raise community awareness of maintaining water quality, while utilizing local technology that is affordable, environmentally friendly, and easy to apply. This way, the residents of Sungai Dua Laut Village are expected to become more self-sufficient in facing the challenges of clean water needs in the future.
