ULM Rector’s Scientific Oration at USN Kolaka: Excellent HR is Capital Towards a Prosperous Nation

Rector of the University of Lambung Mangkurat (ULM) Prof. Dr. Ahmad, SE, M.Sc., gave a scientific oration in front of the graduates of the University of Nineteen November (USN) Kolaka at the USN Undergraduate XIII Graduation Ceremony on Thursday (22/6/2023) in Kolaka, Southeast Sulawesi. In a scientific oration entitled “Mempersiapkan Insani yang Unggul Indonesia Emas 2045”, Prof. Ahmad described one by one the tips on how and strategies that universities can adopt to prepare students to become superior human resources in order to lead to the next golden generation of Indonesia in 2045.

In 2045, Indonesia will reach 100 years of independence. In that year, Indonesia is also predicted to get a demographic bonus. The demographic bonus in question is that 70% of Indonesia’s population is productive age (15-64 years).

The existence of this demographic bonus can be a blessing and can also be a disaster for Indonesia, depending on how we react to it. Therefore, preparations and strategies are needed to improve the quality of human resources for Indonesia’s younger generation so that they have advantages and are able to compete not only on the national level, but also internationally.

Prof. Ahmad further explained that there are several things that need to be considered in building a superior generation. Among the human characteristics or superior generation, namely:

  • Referring to the Qur’an, the superior generation are those who “iqra” or read. Therefore, it is important to build reading habits among the younger generation;
  • The superior generation is able to combine sharpness of heart and intelligence (intelligent);
  • Having a pious nature, that is a human being who in his life always incorporates the value of piety and wisdom in speaking and socializing. Those who have these traits will become superior people and be able to pay attention and provide the best for everyone around them;
  • The superior generation is the generation that is able to become agents of change , they can spread goodness to the environment around them.
  • Have a global insight or global mindset . With a global mindset , the Indonesian generation will excel and be able to take part in the international arena. This is certainly a necessary thing for Indonesia if there is no planned HR development strategy.
  • Able to adapt accept and embrace change. One of the natural properties of environments is that they are unpredictable. One of the conditions for achieving success in life is being adaptive in change.
  • Who is able to put himself in other people’s self ( To empathy)
  • Those who are able to turn uncertainty into certainty. Because in the current dimension of world development, the only certainty is uncertainty. “The dynamics are constantly changing, therefore it is important to use the knowledge we have to make formulations in order to formulate our strategic steps to turn uncertainty into certainty that is profitable for us,” said the Rector.

Education plays a very significant role in bringing progress and prosperity to society. The superiority of natural resources owned by a country now is not the sole guarantee that it will bring people prosperity. “Intelligence, vision, and big dreams, unyielding spirit, and a sense of belief in one’s own strengths, that’s why quality human resources are the basic capital to achieve the nation’s prosperity in the future, especially in welcoming Indonesia’s golden generation,” said Prof. . Ahmad.
