Faperta Animal Husbandry Study Program Participates in the Success of the National Program and Meat Self-Sufficiency in the City of Banjarbaru

Banjarbaru – Mayor of Banjarbaru Aditya Mufti Ariffin directly opened the HIMATERNA EXPO – South Kalimantan Goat Contest with the theme “Increasing the Availability of Superior Cattle Seeds through Goat Cattle Contest” which was carried out by the Animal Husbandry Student Association of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Lambung Mangkurat (ULM) assisted and supported by the Office Food Security, Agriculture and Fisheries in Banjarbaru City on Thursday, (25/3/20233). This activity was attended by the Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Faculty of Agriculture, ULM Dr. Ir. Nursyam A.S., M.Sc, Chairperson of the Banjarbaru City DPRD along with the coordination forum for regional leaders of Banjarbaru City, Head of the Food Security, Agriculture and Fisheries Service for the City of Banjarbaru, Chair of Hima and Students of the Animal Husbandry Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture ULM, Head of the South Kalimantan Provincial Plantation and Animal Husbandry Service, Sub-District Head and The village head of the Anvil Ulin sub-district.

The activity which was held at the Banjarbaru Perpetual Market was attended by 80 participants where members of the Indonesian Sheep Goat Breeders Association were appointed as judges in this contest. The purpose of this activity is based on the livestock population, especially goats, which is still low in Banjarbaru City. Even though it is known that Banjarbaru City which is the capital of South Kalimantan province is still dominated by almost 80% by business actors in agriculture and animal husbandry. Besides that, it is hoped that it will increase the love for agriculture and animal husbandry.

The need for goats in Banjarbaru City per year is approximately 182 tons. Meanwhile, the availability of goats in Banjarbaru City now only reaches 20% of all existing farmers. It is hoped that this routine activity can increase the interest of the younger generation to be able to revive livestock businesses, especially goats in order to increase the availability of goat meat in Banjarbaru City.

The Head of the ULM Faperta Animal Husbandry Department who represented the Dean of Faperta fully appreciated the activities initiated by the ULM Animal Husbandry Department students which had been planned since a year ago. In addition, he thanked the Office of Food Security, Agriculture and Fisheries of the City of Banjarbaru for making this activity possible. “We can improve this activity for bigger and better activities, especially in the field of agriculture and animal husbandry,” said Dr. Ir. Nursyam.

According to him, the goat contest activity has strategic value for the success of the national program, namely self-sufficiency in meat, considering the availability of the number of goats in the city of Banjarbaru is still lacking and the population of seeds is still very limited. Increasing the population can be done with the presence of superior male and male seeds. Therefore, through this goat contest, it is hoped that breeders in Banjarbaru City will be able to display and select superior broodstock and males to be able to produce superior livestock seeds as well.

The Mayor of Banjarbaru expressed his appreciation to the Office of Food Security, Agriculture and Fisheries of the City of Banjarbaru and related parties, not forgetting also the ULM which has organized this activity. in order to meet healthy livestock in the midst of the community’s food needs so that they are suitable for consumption.
